PRICING METRIC

Vercel adds Tracing Spans metric, charges $0.50 per 1M span units on Pro

Vercel introduced a new observability metric, Tracing Spans (Beta), on its pricing page.

WHY IT MATTERS

Observability is becoming another usage-metered surface on Vercel's platform, alongside CDN, Edge, and AI token/trigger fees it has repriced in the past month. Watch whether Tracing Spans follows the Flags path — a beta tag dropped within a couple of months — and whether the $0.50/1M rate holds or moves once real span volumes show up in enterprise deployments.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • 21 changes in the last 365 days, ~11 days apart on average
  • 4th beta-labeled pricing change in 2026
  • Previous change: Speed Insights split, just 1 day earlier
  • Beta labels appear in 124 of 5,664 tracked changes (68 companies) in 180 days

THEIR RATIONALE

Vercel frames this as expanding observability rather than changing what customers already pay for — a new capability with its own beta pricing, distinct from the tiers it touches. For Vercel this is business as usual: this is its second change in two days and its 21st in the last year, a company that reprices and re-metrics its platform roughly every 11 days on average.

THE SIGNAL

The 'Beta' label matters here as much as the price. Vercel has now shipped four beta-labeled changes this year — Flags, Queues, and now Tracing Spans — and its pattern is to launch metered beta features cheap, then either graduate or reprice them as usage data comes in (Flags dropped its beta tag in April after launching at $0.03/1K requests in February). Tracing Spans looks like the same playbook: a low, byte-level metered price designed to get the feature adopted before it's judged as an established line item.

IN CONTEXT

Tracing Spans is Vercel's fourth beta-labeled pricing move this year, following the same pattern as Queues Beta in March and Flags Beta in February — both launched with simple per-unit metering before Flags graduated to general availability in April (removing its Beta tag). It also lands just one day after Vercel split Speed Insights into a free tier plus paid add-on, underscoring how frequently Vercel is re-metering its platform lately. Beta-labeled pricing is a broader industry tactic too — Notion has graduated three features from beta since August (AI Meeting Notes in September among them), while HubSpot leads the pack with 22 beta-labeled changes in the past six months. For Vercel, a beta tag has reliably meant a temporary price rather than a permanent one.
